Oia August 18, 2011

45° today. Walls sweated. The birds have stopped chirping and I realize that I haven't seen any lizards for days. Karen was seared while lying out on the patio; the insane thought of her bursting into flames entered my mind. Climbed the steps, 50 steps to the pool. Lost at least 10 pounds. No one sitting in the sun. Flopped into the pool and found 5 people submerged under the water.

The pool is a postage stamp. It is maybe 20 by 20, but it has a deep end. Hung perpindicualarly for at least forever. Climbed the fifty steps back down to our patio; drenched upon return. So into the deep freeze.

Earlier in the morning, when we had been offered the false hope of a cloudy day we had climbed up to the main street and had visited the Church of Panagia of Platsani, which is in the main square. Wonderful icon art inside. Once again we noticed Orthodox Christians kissing the lips of the Virgin icon, one after the other. Karen wondered what flu season was like in Greece.

It was our 32nd anniversary however, and we ate at Ambrosia Restaurant. We sat on the patio, overlooking the caldera and watched as the last of the pink sky turned to lavender. Karen had the Santorini salad with local tomatoes, capers and caper leaves, Kalamata olives, cucumber, green pepper, Santorini chlora goat's cheese, on a bed of green leaves with balsamic and olive oil vinaigrette. She took much less time to eat it than to read the description. I had the Tender beef fillet with Vinsanto wine and fresh truffles, accompanied by mushroom trifolate risotto and carmelized grapes. The grapes were black, but delicious. It was the best fillet I have ever eaten. Cooked medium rare and with no fat. I had the house red, fruitier than what I had tasted the night before at Floga, and slightly astringent. Not as complimentary as it should have been, but good, and its always potter's luck when you choose the house wine.

We finished the night by wandering along the street. People were burnished by the sun. There was a brisk trade in cold beer. We returned to the ice cube and slept fitfully.
